All About Katie Howell
I believe that every child deserves an education that is both nurturing and challenging. In my classroom, each child is treated with respect and will be expected to show the same respect. We will participate in hands on centers to help reach all types of learners. Every child has the opportunity to succeed! This is my 22nd year teaching and I love teaching first grade. The growth that will be seen during this year will be amazing! I believe that we all fail in life. If we don’t, then we aren’t trying new and challenging things. My hope is that my students feel free to challenge themselves everyday. I believe that students can achieve incredible things when they learn from attempts to do things. I want my classroom to be a safe place where we can all try! If we are not right, we learn why we aren’t right, and then make adjustments for the future. We are “still cool” if we do our best work everyday! Did you know that your brain is constantly getting stronger and learning new things? You have the power to make your brain stronger, smarter, and better! In our classroom, your child is encouraged to be better than he/she was yesterday. This happens by challenging, questions, analyzing, and attempting things each day. We can all learn new and exciting things everyday and in our classroom attempts are always celebrated!
When I am not in school, I enjoy spending time with family. I have been married to my wonderful husband Derek for 20 years. We have a two incredible children. Our thirteen year old named Norah is in eighth grade at Millburn Middle School. Norah is two times special because she has a tic disorder and High Functioning Autism. Our eleven year old son named Desmond keep us very busy and is starting fifth grade at Millburn also. Desmond keeps us especially on our toes because he has sensory processing disorder (he is a sensory seeker) and has ADHD. Both of my kids deal with anxiety on a daily basis.
My beautiful kids: Norah is 14 and Desmond is 11.
Norah is a pitcher/first basemen for her travel softball team and is a talented digital artist.
Desmond loves Lego, building dioramas, plays baseball, and is extremely creative.
Derek and I have been married for 20 years. He is a middle school PE teacher in Waukegan and collects Star Wars.
We love spending time together watching movies and being outside as a family.
